Claudius Reinicke

Media Management
Campus Stuttgart

Occupation following studies: Project management Social Media, Mercedes-AMG GmbH
Where do you work now and what is your position?
Mercedes-AMG GmbH as  Project Director Social Media

What does your role entail?
As Project Director for social media I have control of all Mercedes-AMG's social media activities. From strategic planning through to operational implementation to evaluation.

Why did you take the position and what inspires you?
I work at Mercedes-AMG because the company, and especially their products, inspire me. I was also assigned a great task with lots of responsibilities fresh from my studies, a role where I can grow and which motivates me on a daily basis.

Did you imagine you'd be doing this kind of job before you began your studies?
No. I thought I'd start out in an agency position. Social media in corporate communications hadn't  really taken off in Germany in 2009.

Did the teachers and projects at the university prepare you for the work you're doing today?

The study course was extremely practical and the project work and direct contact to various companies really helped me to orientate myself better and take the first steps in the professional world.

Where did you do your internship semester and how would you rate your experience there?

My internship semester was at Roth & Lorenz, an agency for brand communication in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. My experience there was very good. I worked for different clients on various projects and learned a lot. I really liked the typical agency atmosphere.

How was your contact with your fellow students?
Are you still in touch today?
It was always appreciative and always interesting. The different characters I came across helped me develop myself during a very formative time. I still have contact with some of them but it's more private than professional. I don't think this will change in the future.

When you think back to your studies, what really stands out? What was particularly good and what aspects did you not like so much?

I particularly liked the courses, my fellow students, the practical learning and the contact to different companies. I wasn't so keen on the fact that there was relatively little campus life beyond the studies and that there wasn't an international semester at the time.

What do you think about "change and transformation"?

It's part of my life. I am 27 now and have never been able to tell you where I would be in two years. I doubt that's going to change any time soon.

How important is it to be "open to change" to be successful today and tomorrow in the modern, digitally driven world of work?

It's very important. In the media industry especially, it is of the utmost importance to be able to deal with changing circumstances and trends in order to advance professionally. As a young person, you should always give the impression in your working life that  you are up to date and able to anticipate new trends in order to be able to approach them in a way that creates value for the customer. There's a phrase that sums it up "If you don't keep up with the times, time will pass you by“.

Do you know where you want to be in 10 years time?

Not professionally, the industry is too dynamic. But I have set a few goals for myself over the next ten years.

Is there any advice you would like to share with our freshmen?

When you're in your studies it's like an open playing field where you can try many different things without fear of repercussions, you won't be blamed if something goes wrong. From this I learned that failure doesn't have to be shameful because you learn from your mistakes. The biggest mistake you can make during your studies is not to take a risk and give something new a try. And finally, don't forget to have some fun. Without any fun it quickly becomes boring.
