Tim Juraschek

Media Management
Campus Cologne

Occupation following studies: Head of CSR Management, Event Management, SV Werder Bremen
Where do you work now and what is your position?
I work for the Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen. My exact job title is: Head of CSR Management, Event Management.

What does your role entail?

As head of CSR management, I head up a department with ten main employees and numerous helpers who are committed to corporate social responsibility. We coordinate and develop a number of projects and member programs. In the field of event management, I am a member of a cross-functional work group, which takes care of the professional home events and other major events (fans' day, Christmas celebrations, anniversaries, etc.).

Why did you take the position and what inspires you?
My job is incredibly versatile. No day is like another. I have a great, creative team that is constantly trying to develop Werder Bremen. When it comes to CSR we are the leader in the national league (Bundesliga) and have been leading the table for several years. Through our CSR work, we have managed to achieve a financial value for Werder Bremen.

Did you imagine you'd be doing this kind of job before you began your studies?
I didn't know what I'd be doing later in my professional life. I only knew the direction I wanted it to go. I was able to co-create and develop my current position myself.

Did the teachers and projects at the university prepare you for the work you're doing today?
The cooperations weren’t so helpful for me. But the university staff helped me a lot. They were always on hand to offer advice and assistance. I can recommend these to everyone. Apart from that, the study areas were so broad and varied that of course you can't apply all the content you learn there in your professional life. But it varies from industry to industry.

Where did you do your internship semester and how would you rate your experience there?
I'd spent my internship semester at Werder Bremen and was offered a full-time job immediately afterward. I advise everyone to make the most of the internship semester as it's such a great opportunity.

How was your contact with your fellow students? Are you still in touch today?
My contact with fellow students was very good and a very important part of my studies. Even if you don't see each other very often, some friendships really last. Professionally there are occasional overlaps. It helps to have a direct connection or an existing network.

When you think back to your studies, what really stands out?
All the great people I met from all different levels of life; an incredibly beautiful city and the many experiences during my study that really helped me. Whether positive or negative - you benefit from everything you learn in your later professional life.

What do you think about "change and transformation"?
Standing still means lagging behind. You shouldn't try to stop change and should always try to move with the times. That applies to everything.

How important is it to be "open to change" to be successful today and in the future, digitally driven world of work?
If you shut yourself out, you can't develop.

Do you know where you want to be in 10 years time?

If I am still as happy with my job ten years from now, then everything will be fine. Only my private life will need a bit more time and attention.

Is there any advice you would like to share with our freshmen?

Give your development and your professional career some time. In my work as a department manager I've had many interviews over the past six years and I feel that a certain over-estimated self-assessment  (job related and performance related) is quite common. Don’t forget that being an academic is no longer the exception, but the norm.
