Susanne Breyer

Media Management
Campus Stuttgart

Occupation following studies: Senior Project Manager / Retail Marketing, BMW Group
Where do you work now and what is your position?
Senior Project Manager for Retail Marketing and the BMW Group.

What does your role entail?
I create communication concepts for BMW's launch models for BMW trade communications. I support all BMW markets worldwide with innovative communication strategies that activate new target groups and ensure the continual loyalty of existing customers.

Why did you take the position and what inspires you?
After my first position in BMW Customer events, I was thrilled by the proximity to the product and the trade organization in retail marketing. As a Senior Project Manager, I am involved in a wide range of projects ranging from customer activation to innovative test drive formats, to online marketing activities and app development. This makes my working day really interesting and very varied. I find the international interaction with the different markets particularly exciting. My role involves finding suitable concepts for the local markets while not losing sight of the central communication goals. I enjoy being able to make international contacts when I visit local markets and expanding my personal horizons.

Did you imagine you'd be doing this kind of job before you began your studies?
No. I always knew I wanted to work in event marketing for premium brands. But I never imagined that my studies would lead to so many professional possibilities and that so many doors would open for me.

Did the teachers and projects at the university prepare you for the work you're doing today?

The many practical projects and case studies in all semesters provided a great insight into the working world. I really appreciated the fact that many lecturers brought and shared very in-depth real life business experiences. We were also really encouraged to go our own way. That was definitely a factor in helping me to set up my own coaching business (Susanne Breyer Coaching)  beside my regular job. I offer coaching to people and companies in project management, corporate strategy and personal development.

Where did you do your internship semester and how would you rate your experience there?

I was at a Stuttgart agency that specializes in Experiential Marketing in the area of premium and luxury brands. In a very short time I learned how to set up, manage and successfully implement challenging projects in an international environment. The expectations were high, and so was my learning curve. It provided me with my first job after graduation.

How was your contact with your fellow students? Are you still in touch today?
All my interactions with fellow students during the study period were open and helpful. After graduation, contact has become rather sporadic, but the connections to Macromedia University alumni continue. I often meet other graduates in a professional environment, which instantly creates a familiar atmosphere.

When you think back to your studies, what really stands out?
With the small study groups and the 'family' atmosphere on campus I enjoyed many warm and happy experiences. I'm still in touch with certain lecturers who are always available for professional questions, which has helped me appreciate the study time in a different way again.

What do you think about "change and transformation"?
It's a core part of today's world - especially in the communication and marketing. It is also important to keep up with new trends professionally. That's why I decided to take several professional online marketing courses at Macromedia Munich this year.

How important is it to be "open to change" to be successful today and in the future, digitally driven world of work?
Indispensable. In retail marketing in particular, digital change is very noticeable and opens up new sales channels and opportunities for people and companies.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I definitely have goals, but I also find it exciting to see where my path will lead me. On one hand I can see myself staying with BMW and also in Munich. But I'd also really like to spend some time abroad. And on top of that I'd like to expand Susanne Breyer Coaching too. 10 years is a long time.

Is there any advice you would like to share with our freshmen?

Enjoy your study time! It will be over before you know it! Enjoy whatever comes afterwards and never forget to have fun. It's always hard work at the start, but for me, every challenge and all my efforts have paid off!
