Anna Kugler
Media Management, PR and Communication Management
Campus Stuttgart

Occupation following studies: Communications Specialist, Unilever Deutschland GmbH
Where do you work now and what is your position?
I work for Unilever Deutschland GmbH as a "Communications Specialist".

What does your role entail?
As a "Communications Specialist" I am responsible for the PR and social media in the B2B area.

Why did you take the position and what inspires you?
After gaining experience in agencies and medium-sized companies, I was keen to working in a globally successful company. I like the fact that I'm always encouraged here and nothing stands still. On top of that there is a lot that can be done and pushed forward in the B2B area. Plus the daily contact with journalists and agencies makes the job really varied and keeps me on my toes.

Did you imagine you'd be doing this kind of job before you began your studies?
Before my studies I always imagined a "stylish" agency kind of life - which  I did have for a while ;)

Did the teachers and projects at the university prepare you for the work you're doing today?
The practical-oriented courses and contents at Macromedia Stuttgart definitely helped prepare me for my professional life. The professors and lecturers were extremely motivating and were always on hand to offer advice and assistance.

Where did you do your internship semester and how would you rate your experience there?
I did my internship semester at Jung von Matt in Stuttgart and wrote my Bachelor thesis at the end of it. My experience there was entirely positive and I would do my practical semester there again without a second thought.

If applicable: How would you evaluate your semester at the foreign partner university? What experiences did you take away?
Unfortunately. this was not offered when I was enrolled. That's why I did  an internship in Sydney, Australia after my studies.

How was your contact with your fellow students? Are you still in touch today?
My relationships with my fellow students was and continues to be outstanding. We have become firm friends and  we exchange a lot of experiences and learnings from our current jobs, there are plenty of overlaps.

When you think back to your studies, what really stands out? What was particularly good and what aspects did you not like so much?
My "study-time" was great. It all fit together perfectly: We were a great group, we had fun together both on and off campus. We also had very 'human' professors and faculty. I liked exam time less of course - but you just have to get through it.

What do you think about "change and transformation"?
I think you should be open for change and be able to leave your comfort zone. Because: "A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there".

How important is it to be "open to change" to be successful today and in the future modern, digitally driven world of work?

Being able to keep an open mind is the most important thing you can do in your professional life - especially in PR and Marketing. Something that's "announced"  today, is “out” by tomorrow. So you have to be able to keep up with the times and always be open to new things.

Do you know where you want to be in 10 years time?

I definitely want to continue with my career, hopefully in a leading role. I think today's improved work-life balance - particularly at Unilever - make it possible to combine family and work life very well.

Is there any advice you would like to share with our freshmen?

The best advice I can give students is to start making contacts in the real  business world straight away - preferably through a working student position - as they'll be invaluable to your future working life. Foreign experience is also great for your CV and is often considered a pre-requisite these days.
