Where do you work now and what is your position?

I am a Public Relations Manager at Fisherman's Friend StrongmanRun Germany


What does your role entail?

I am responsible for the press communications of the StrongmanRun in Germany. In short, I am constantly in touch with a wide range of media representatives to communicate topics related to the Fisherman's Friend StrongmanRun to enable journalists to achieve multi-faceted coverage.

Why did you take the position and what inspires you?

I've always been inspired by "Fisherman's Friend" and the story behind it. When the opportunity arose to work for StrongmanRun in Germany, I felt like I'd won the lottery. Working for a brand that I can identify with is a privilege. The run is now the world's largest obstacle course in the most extraordinary venues. It offers the ideal combination of challenge and fun for spectators and runners.

Did you imagine you'd be doing this kind of job before you began your studies?

I realized quite early on that I was very interested in PR, in addition to journalism. Even during my journalism studies, my fellow students always prophesied that I would change sides and they were right.

How did the teachers and projects at the university prepare you for the work you're doing today?

Practical experience as a journalist is very important, but the theory is equally relevant. A good journalist understands and masters both. My studies at Macromedia prepared me very well for the world of work. Nevertheless, there was also a lot of "learning by doing" for me.

Where did you do your internship semester and how would you rate your experience there?

I completed my internship semester at Condé Nast Verlag in Munich at VOGUE. Simply being able to look behind the scenes into a modem magazine's editorial process at THE fashion magazine per se had always been a dream of mine. My experiences were very instructive, as I had never worked for a magazine before. So I got to learn everything about the editorial production process.

How was your contact with your fellow students? Are you still in touch today? 

The contact with my fellow students was always good - both in Cologne and Munich. I would hope that we as Macromedians will continue to support each other after our studies too. The alumni network offers the ideal platform for getting involved with the university and helping each other.

When you think back to your studies, what really stands out? What was particularly good and what aspects did you not like so much? 
For me there was no defining moment, it was rather a feeling. Like the last days before submitting project work. The energy and the cohesion among the students was something really special for me. The coordination and organization in some courses could have been better.

What do you think about "change and transformation"?
If something is going to remain then it must also change. I find change is something very important and for me there is nothing worse than stagnation - in every respect. Through changes I have matured and have been able to extend my horizons.

How important is it to be "open to change" to be successful today and in the future modern, digitally driven world of work?

In our fast-paced 2.0 world, openness to change is unavoidable. If you are open to it you can always be up to date, but I also think it is important not to follow every trend.

Do you know where you want to be in 10 years time?

In 10 years time I would like to be a director in a large industrial company, either in the external press or internal communications department.

Is there any advice you would like to share with our freshmen?

I would tell them to set themselves goals. Consider exactly where you want to be in the next 5-10 years and build everything you do around that plan - from internships, student studies to the internship semester. The latter is the perfect way to get to know potential new employers.
