Study Bachelor's degree in Music Management (B.A.)

Bachelor's Degree in Media Management with specialisation in Music Management: Classical Music, Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, Electro, R'n'B

"Music was my first love and it will be my last." If music is to set the tone in your life not only privately, but also professionally, our Bachelor's programme in Music Management (B.A.) is just the thing for you.

Whether it's music production, artist promotion or festivals - music managers are always in the thick of things. As the right and left hand of their artist, they organise concerts and ensure media coverage. Furthermore, they advise on the further artistic development applying a great deal of tact and sensitivity.

In recent years, globalisation and digitalisation of our daily media have brought a breath of fresh air to the music market and brought about drastic changes. Where music was once bought, it is now shared. Where once a record deal was the be-all and end-all, YouTube today offers everyone a global stage and access to millions of listeners. Fan communities via social media are just as indispensable for newcomer bands as they are for the legends of Rock'n'Roll. In the music industry, innovative concepts and the targeted use of digital media are more important than ever.

So it's no wonder that the demand for professional music managers is booming. A good music manager combines creative qualities with goal-oriented, entrepreneurial action. His focus lies in the strategic conception and operative management surrounding the realisation of various projects in the colourful world of the music industry.

Content of the Media Management course with specialisation in Music Management

In the specialisation Music Management, which is offered at the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, you will acquire all the necessary qualifications to professionally and successfully manage projects, productions, concerts, artists and bands. You will learn to think conceptually and act operationally in order to make the right decisions at the right time.

The course contents include a profound knowledge of the target groups and market mechanisms of the entire industry (recording media, live, etc.), contract, copyright and exploitation law, branding and marketing in the music business as well as the sociology and psychology of music, music history and artist management.

In addition to specialist knowledge, the promotion of artists or music productions also requires a high degree of personal identification and commitment. After all, behind every great artist - whether the Beatles, Post Malone or Ed Sheeran - there is always intelligent management. Among other things, the curriculum includes:
  • Basics of music management
  • Musicology
  • Live entertainment
  • Digital Business
  • Artist management and music marketing
  • Special topics in music management

Your postgraduate skills after studying music management

If you decide to specialise in music management in the Media Management bachelor's programme, you can expect a wide-ranging and well-coordinated modular curriculum. In addition to scientific work and methodological competence, numerous practical projects will be a central part of your studies. Business administration basics, project management and fundamentals specific to music management form the foundation of your studies. This includes:
  • Media design and technology: print media / audiovisual media / online media
  • Music business
  • Artist management
  • Music distribution
  • Music and New Media
  • Contract and copyright law

With our Business English course we prepare you for working internationally as a music manager and throughout your studies we promote your social skills and personal development.

High practical relevance during your studies

The music management course at Macromedia University is very practice-oriented. You start working on your own projects early on - e.g., a newcomer competition, which you and your fellow students plan and organise right up to the grand finale. You will be accompanied by professors who will share their many years of practical experience in the music and media industry with you.

In addition, you will spend an internship semester in a renowned company in the industry. Here you will learn "hands-on" in an intensive exchange with real industry professionals. You can find detailed information on this in our Project portal.

In numerous practical projects you will apply your theoretical knowledge from the academic training in real projects with our company partners. Depending on the task, you will work in teams with fellow students from other subjects such as film and television, design or journalism. You will then present the results to the respective practice partner in a final presentation. In this way, you will also gain routine in speaking with confidence. In the process, you will also have the opportunity to make valuable contacts that will make your entry into professional life easier.

Among our practical partners in the music business are Buddemusic, Berlin Music Commission, Deezer, Sony Classical and the Universal Music Group. At Macromedia University you can also try your hand as a concert and tour manager during your studies. At our campus in Freiburg you will be eagerly awaited by students studying Popular Music.

Whether rock, pop or jazz: music is made around the clock at our Freiburg campus and as a prospective music manager you have the opportunity to organise the university bands' tour of Germany with live concerts all over Germany. They take care of everything, from promotion and exploitation rights to stage technology. In this way you can make your first contacts in the music business and gain valuable practical experience.

Fully accredited semester abroad

Students who study music management with us in the 7-semester version gain intensive international experience during their studies. They spend one semester at one of our worldwide and renowned partner universities and collect 30 ECTS, which are fully recognised.

The curriculum abroad is tailored to the requirements of your media management studies with a specialisation in event management. This makes the semester abroad a full academic semester and you will continue to be supported by our professors. In this semester you will make valuable contacts, gain experience abroad and perhaps even make new friends for life. In any case, you will intensify your language skills and learn to adapt to other cultures and ways of thinking.
