RWE Supply & Trading: Redesign of the user interface for optimizing power plant usage
RWE Supply & Trading GmbH is RWE AG's commercial hub for energy and energy-related raw materials in both their physical and/or derivative forms. It is also responsible for the the economic optimization of the Group's power generation.

The practice project's goal was to optimize the usability and user experience of the software that controls the power plant's utilization. Some 15 people work in shifts to ensure continuous cover. Using the control program they oversee the resource planning for RWE power plants in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Part of the project was a kick-off workshop with the project partner, a design workshop and several prototype workshops as well as an interim and final presentation.

Both Master students (Media and Communication Management) and Bachelor students (Media Design) were involved in the project. The focus for Master students was to assess user's needs using empirical social research methods (quantitative and qualitative surveys, observation) and derive implications for prototyping. The Bachelor students focused on the information architecture, the visual design, interaction concept, screen design and the prototyping of user interfaces.

Practice Partner Statement

"User interface development traditionally looks soley on the technical functionality with a particular focus on speeding up operating speed. Design criteria and improving user experience were not the priority and in the face of a growing number of requests and information clutter operating speed slowed down. It was particularly important for us to approach the problem from a completely new angle and openly analyze the entire process from another perspective. The results have proved very helpful, we implemenenet some ideas before the project was even finished!"

"The prototype has given us a lot of good ideas that we can build on and develop. The interdisciplinary nature of this cooperation project was a great experience for the participants on our side and will also be an asset for finding solutions for future tasks. Overall this joint project has brought us another step forward."
