Travian Games: New Business Models in the Game Industry

Travian Games: New Business Models in the Game Industry
Travian Games is one of the world's leading providers of browser-based online games. In 2003, a team led by company founder Gerhard Müller created the first version of the strategy browser game Travian. As Travian Legends, this game is also played by 5 million people.

Other Travian games are the magical garden simulation game Miramagia, the browser game Rail Nation, Travian Kingdoms and the online racing game United GP.

Since 2016, the Bavarian game developer also acts as a third-party marketer for the multiplayer online role-playing game Crowfall and since 2017 for the multiplayer online game (MMOG) Shroud of the Avatar. With an annual turnover of over 30 million euros, Travian Games has been the largest company in the gaming industry in Bavaria since 2017.

University cooperation Travian Games and Macromedia University

The subject of the cooperation between the Macromedia University and Travian Games were payment models in online games. The students examined whether Travian players accept micro transactions in mobile video games. Micro Transactions are a flexible form of monetization where players do not have to buy subscriptions or complete units.

The result was that Travian players welcome such variable payment models and their willingness to buy extremely increased.

For the practice partner Travian Games this was a very valuable, empirically based knowledge. The student results helped the company management to further develop the terms of use of the games.

Study Games Management

Apart from games design and dramaturgy, there are also economic aspects for the success of the games. The Macromedia University of Applied Sciences takes this into account, starting in March 2019 with the master program Games Management (M.A.). It is designed to train the managers needed for this industry.
