Bocholt becomes Smart: Macromedia cooperates with Bocholt city marketing
What opportunities does digitization offer local retailers? How can a company compete with Amazon Prime? These were the questions tackled by Macromedia design students for the City of Bocholt, Germany. The semester-long initiative, "Bocholt becomes smart”, explored ideas about new technologies and perspectives for urban design and development.

As part of the "Bocholt becomes smart" initiative, Media Design students from the Cologne Campus developed five measures to digitize the retail trade in Bocholt- including a concept for a local alternative to Amazon Prime.  They worked in cooperation with Stadtmarketing from Bocholt. From the Macromedia side, the project was led by Professor Dr. med. Christof Breidenich and Macromedia alumni and design experts Fabian Coenradi and Katharina Thiel.

Macromedia students praised for their innovative concepts

Frank Tentler initiated "SMARTER ACTING BOCHOLT" together with Stadtmarketing Bocholt in April, 2018. He assisted Macromedia students throughout their project work this semester and was enthusiastic about their commitment and know-how: "They understand the principle of a smart sphere, the purpose of data protection, the use of a block chain, location-based technologies/services, and where AI can be sensibly used.”

Following the presentation, discussions took place between representatives of the Stadtmarketing and the other marketing experts who attended. They conversed about the impressive nature of the student proposals and the feasibility of integrating the ideas.

Jürgen Block, Managing Director of the Bundesvereinigung City und Stadtmarketing Deutschland eV, commented on the approaches and solutions: "I have never experienced such a range of innovative concepts from students." Overall, our students had a wonderful opportunity to gain re-life, hands-on experience in the design field. Cooperation with companies and project work is a huge part of the Macromedia study experience; and we are always thrilled to see our students flourish.
