German Savings Bank Finance Group (DSV): Future Scenarios of Blockchain Technology
In the finances branche, blockchain technology belongs to the most discussed digital future trends as there are multiple possible application fields that go far beyond the options of virtual currencies.

The objective of this Macromedia project under guidance of Prof. Thomas Stegmann was to develop use cases and scenarios of blockchain technology for Deutscher Sparkassenverlag (DSV), a specialized solution provider for German Saving Banks alongside corporations and associations of German Savings Bank Finance Group (Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe), a group of credit institutions in Germany consisting of 600 companies with around 354,500 employees. Based on qualitative research students were asked to develop hypotheses on possible scenarios and to test their relevance to the customers. The research project was accompanied by bachelor students under guidance of Prof. Dr. Brigitte Kleinselbeck.

The approach: Idea generation based on design thinking method

Following the design thinking approach, master and bachelor students developed blockchain solutions, their tasks longing from field exploration and the development of concrete use cases to idea creation, prototyping and test. The use cases grounded on scientific research, including expert interviews, workshops, focus groups and quantitative verification. In the creative phase, students used various methods such as ABC method, brainstorming or de Bono’s six hats. For prototyping, they worked with Adobe XD among other tools. Tests were based on interviews.

The result: Application-specific solutions for investors, founders, real estate or shopping

Students developed solutions for the stock or real estate market, investors, shopping applications or international account management, and sparked DSV jurors Thorsten Hallermeier, Director Organization & IT, and Inhouse Consultant Robert Glanc in eight minute presentations. Master students Isabelle Bedê, Kateryna Laiko and Matinuch Ouyyamwongs were honored as best pitch team. They convinced the jury not only with a great presentation but also with a winning idea for mobile business banking for startups featuring digital signature, smart invoice and AI business consultancy using easy-to-use interface and secure blockchain technology. The solution for real estate markets by bachelor students Barbara Pauli, Sara Ritterath, Paula Becker and Felix Höfermann was honored as best use case. As thank-you gifts, students received certificates, gift cards, books and an invitation to DSV’s creative space to continue co-creation of groundbreaking ideas. First field trip will take place in January.

Statement by project partner

„Within a tight time frame, students have developed excellent use cases and solutions, our company started thinking of too. That’s why we want to continue partnership at our creative space. We also think of joint bachelor or master theses. To make  along story short: We are wowed.”
