EY: Reseach into successful strategies to promote global start-ups
How can cooperation between start-ups and companies be established to make digital transformation more successful? Are certain organizational principles particularly suitable for the advancement of the start-up culture? These key questions were the starting point of a one-semester collaboration between Macromedia University and the consulting firm EY Ernst & Young.

A comparative analysis of "Riding the Digital Wave: Digital Transformation through Collaboration" revealed that depending on the business segment, specific principles or constellations dominated in the advancement of start-ups. In the technology, media and telecommunications industry seven specific organizational principles prevailed in so-called "Collaborative Incubators." While in the automotive industry, strategic partnerships dominate, and in start-up support for data- and information-based business models a more balanced distribution of support measures was common.

"The question of how to drive innovation through start-ups, systematically and effectively, is essential for any business – and is particularly difficult for SMEs. The fact that industries exhibit different effective patterns, is an enormously valuable outcome of the Macromedia analysis. With this study, the students have provided businesses, particularly SMEs, with a toolbox that will help them successfully collaborate with start-ups. It will also benefit our project partners at Ernst & Young in the advise they provide to their customers," said Prof. Dr. Dr. Castulus Kolo, Dean of the Macromedia University who led and conducted the study scientifically, together with external lecturer and design and innovation expert Oliver Hellriegel.

Prof. Dr. Jochen Vogel
, a partner at Ernst & Young, stressed the relevance of the qualitative analysis. "Digital transformation has created a tremendous momentum and pressure for change in all sectors. This is also a focus of our advisory mandates. The extensive and internationally proven results of the Macromedia study will help us to make our recommendations to customers even more specific regarding successful digital transformation through cooperation with start-ups."
