Smart Urban Mobility - Mercedes-Benz Vans and Macromedia Berlin Kick off Summer Project

Macromedia University Berlin and Mercedes-Benz Vans are working together on a project to envision the future of craftsmanship in the aspect of mobility in a car free city during summer semester 2019. A report by Katharina Frank:

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Brigitte Kleinselbeck and Prof. Thomas Stegmann, students from four courses came together to meet the Head of Smart City at Mercedes Benz Vans, Armin Scheu from Headquarter Stuttgart. Last Thursday, 50 bachelor and master students in International Management B.A.Media and Communication Management B.A., as well as the generic master course and the Smart City Design M.A. got their first meeting with the client and were able to discuss the research question: “How will craftsmen move in a car free inner city in the future?”

Redefining the old standards and designing the future

Applying the design thinking approach, students will focus on qualitative research to truly understand the challenge. They will also set up use cases and test them with relevant stakeholders. First obstacles are to define the different aspects of their task: Who are craftsmen? What are the needs and requirements of  craftsmen to fulfill their work? What  is considered as the inner city and where can a line be drawn? What qualifies as a car and what does car free really mean? How is it right now? What will be changing in the future that will impact these questions? With his inspiring introduction, Armin Scheu went beyond the boundaries of automobility and put a lively discussion in motion. "It was so amazing to see students’ competencies grow within seconds right after the professional input. We highly appreciate this great openness for new solutions", professors commented. Go for it!
