ESS: communication ideas for large European research facility
Lund in southern Sweden is home to the world's most powerful neutron spallation source. 17 European countries are involved in the mammoth project, which will open a new dimension on the scientific research into basic neutron structures and material properties. The highly complex system will not be operational until the end of the decade, but developing the relevant research projects will take years. It's therefore important for the ESS to establish dialogue with young scientists now in preparation for the future.

The objective: Early involvement of young international scientists
"The enormous potential of the world's largest neutron source has not yet reached universities. Our goal is to attract the best brains in science to us now and encourage them to start building their field of research around ESS," says Allen Weeks, head of communications at ESS. A cooperation with Macromedia University's Media Management students provided ideas on how best to do this.

Implementation: University Roadshow and Science Slam
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Pietzcker, students developed concepts for, among other things, a roadshow to German university physics departments and also a Science Slam. "Young scientists in physics departments form small, close-knit groups that rarely interact with external scientific networks. That's why the students chose very specific personal and focused targeting. I think the measures were extremely successful and am very pleased with the conceptual strength displayed by the students."

At the end of the semester, the third and fourth semester Macromedia students traveled to Lund to present their ideas before employees from the communications department at ESS.
