This is how Europe communicates: Master students visit Brussels

How does the European Commission’s way of working look like? What are the important topics? And who else within the EU power centre is communicating with each other? Our Media and Communication management Master students from Hamburg tried to find answers to these questions during their excursion to Brussels this April with Professor Dr. Dominik Pietzcker.

The three day excursion was intense and fully packed with insightful meetings and events, many thanks to Prof. Dr. Dominik Pietzcker, the university’s expert for political communication who organized this trip. Within the timeframe of three days, the students got to take part in a press conference of the European Commission, visit the TV studios and most importantly, they had the chance to talk to experts of different EU sections.

They listened to discussions about trade relationships between EU, USA and China, about the migration policy in the Schengen area, the importance of small and medium-sized companies in Europe and the relevance of communication initiatives of the EU. Further topics were gender equality, health protection as well as air quality in regards to the ongoing fine particles debate. The students decided on those topics in advance, while Nikola John and Cornelia Krehbiel were the ones to identify the right contact persons and organize the meetings.

The culinary highlight of the trip: The European Commission invited the students to have lunch at “Kafenio”, a popular Greek restaurant.
